First grade. A grade where every kid was still learning how to read and write. I had so many visions and dreams I captured through writing — not held back by something as simple as spelling. But as I got older, the hardships grew.
By fifth grade, I was no longer just a student who had a hard time reading and writing. I was “slow” and “dumb.” I let those words become personal, and slowly, they began to drown me — until someone said, “You have dyslexia.”
I was introduced to someone who became my support, teacher, and advocate — someone who showed me dyslexia wasn’t something to be ashamed of, but something I could be proud of. Through time, patience, and accommodations, I learned to see my ability to achieve my dreams.
The more unfairness I faced, and the more I had to explain the basics of dyslexia to teachers, the more I realized there is injustice in the education system. I see a change that needs to be made — and nothing will stop me, not even the fact that I’m starting this at 14 years old.
